Back-to-School Readiness: Tips & Tricks

Believe it or not, it’s back-to-school time! We know those first few weeks adjusting back to the school year after summer vacation can be tough, so we’ve compiled some helpful tips to ease the transition.

A strong start does not require a perfect first day. Students benefit most from predictable routines, realistic expectations, and regular conversations with the adults who support them. Families can use the ideas below to make the transition back to school calmer and more manageable.

Elementary School: Build dependable routines

  • Set a consistent bedtime and wake-up time several days before school begins.
  • Create a simple morning routine so clothing, breakfast, and school materials are ready without a rush.
  • Choose one regular place for homework, reading, and school supplies.
  • Practice small responsibilities, such as packing a backpack or checking a folder, to build independence.

Middle School: Make conversation easier

  • Instead of asking only, “How was school?” try questions that invite specific, low-pressure answers:
  • What was one interesting or unexpected part of your day?
  • Who did you spend time with today?
  • Was anything confusing, stressful, or especially enjoyable?
  • What is one thing you want to remember or handle tomorrow?

High School: Support growing independence

  • Use a calendar to track assignments, activities, tests, and application deadlines.
  • Encourage healthy sleep, regular meals, movement, and reasonable limits on late-night screen use.
  • Help students explore classes, careers, service opportunities, and interests without expecting an immediate long-term plan.
  • Treat setbacks as information: review what happened, identify one adjustment, and try again.

A simple family readiness check

  • Confirm school-day transportation and arrival or dismissal plans.
  • Review the school calendar and save important dates.
  • Organize required supplies, devices, chargers, and login information.
  • Identify whom the student should contact when academic or personal support is needed.
  • Schedule a brief weekly check-in to review progress and upcoming responsibilities.

The most helpful message parents can offer is simple: You do not need to have everything figured out on the first day. We will take the year one step at a time, and you will have support along the way.
