Freeman Scores & Shines in World Cup Win Over Australia
The United States Men’s National Team continued its impressive run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Australia, and once again, 2023 SAI Academy graduate Alex Freeman was at the center of the action.
Freeman delivered a complete performance on both sides of the ball, helping the United States secure its second consecutive World Cup victory.
With the USA holding a narrow 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, Freeman produced one of the defining moments of the match. The Villarreal CF defender made a dramatic sliding challenge inside the penalty area to deny a dangerous Australian attack and preserve the slim lead.
Then, just before halftime, Freeman made his mark offensively.
Rising above the goalkeeper after a deflected shot, he headed home the United States’ second goal of the match to extend the lead to 2-0. Originally called back for offside, the goal was eventually given after a VAR review. It was Freeman’s third international goal and his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, marking another milestone in the young defender’s remarkable career.
The United States would dig in its heels defensively in the second half and secure the clean sheet to give the USMNT its second straight World Cup win for the first time since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1930.
Adding to the celebration, Paraguay’s 1-0 victory over Türkiye later in the day officially secured first place in Group D for the United States before the final round of group matches.
Freeman’s rise continues to be a source of pride for the entire SAI Academy community. Since graduating from SAI in 2023, he has become a regular with the USMNT, earned a club-record transfer from Orlando City SC to Villarreal CF, and now has a World Cup goal to his name.
The United States will conclude Group D play against Türkiye on June 25 before turning its attention to the knockout rounds.
With Group D already secured, the Americans now await final results across the tournament to determine their Round of 32 opponent. The United States will play its Round of 32 match on Wednesday, July 1, at 8:00 p.m. at the Bay Area Stadium.
